Hi all. I’m totally new to all this so please treat me gently! I’m looking for a mountain bike, or possibly two, so that me and the missus can take the kids out on a few trails, and maybe so that I can have a play on some more fun stuff. Emphasis is definitely on CHEEEAP!! I had a look at a few advice forums and they seem to think I’d be better to get a half decent used bike rather than a bargain basement new one (Halfords seems to be a dirty word!!). Any pointers as to what I should be looking for, where from, etc. would be very welcome. Equally, if anyone has anything that might fit the bill – a previously loved old thing now sitting dejected, taking up space in the garage next to its shiny replacement - could you let me know? I don’t mind getting my hands dirty if it needs a bit of work. If it helps, I’m 6’ and Mrs JimmyNail is about 5’10”. Thanks in advance.

i'd suggest that it may well be worth while paying £250 - £300 for a new bike - try Giant, Trek or Spesh. If you then decide to buy better bikes, or that (aaaaagh) MTB ing is not for you you should get most of your money back if you keep them in good condition.

Hi Fellrunner Thanks for the offer, but even after negotiations I don't think I could afford the wheels!! Pesky credit crunch

If you're still after a bike... I have an old Marin full suss - it might be a bit small for you but it'd be fine for the mrs I'd imagine. All it really needs is a new fork & gear cables - the rest of it works pretty well. Looking for about £200 for it - it was over £1000 new. Drop me a PM if you want a look at it
